Returning home with his father after a shopping expedition, Wong Fei-Hong is unwittingly caught up in the battle between foreigners who wish to export ancient Chinese artifacts and loyalists who don't want the pieces to leave the country. Fei-Hong has learned a style of fighting called "Drunken Boxing", which makes him a dangerous person to cross. Unfortunately, his father is opposed to his engaging in any kind of fighting, let alone drunken boxing. Consequently, Fei-Hong not only has to fight against the foreigners, but he must overcome his father's antagonismwell.
I wrote a very positive comment for this film a while back, and I stand by everything I said. But having just seen the newly-dubbed American version, I fear that people are going to get the wrong impression about Jackie Chan and about this film. The original version is amazing; the American version is terrible.<br/><br/>Let's begin with the dubbing. Some people apparently cannot deal with reading subtitles, but dubbing is infinitely worse. Many of the jokes fall flat when audibly translated into English. I can't understand Cantonese, but delivery and comic timing can succeed across language barriers. By re-translating much of the dialogue and getting some lame English-speaking voiceover actors (other than Jackie himself), the non-action scenes are unbearable. I was particularly disappointed with the voiceover for Anita Muithe mother. She was much funnier in Chinese. <br/><br/>In addition, the score and all the sound effects have been redone, poorly. I can't understand why they would want to replace a good Chinese with a more generically Chinese, somewhat Americanized score. The change made me realize that the music is incredibly important in aiding the rhythm of the fight choreography. The new score fails to do that. And the new sound effects, while certainly less jarring to uninitiated viewers of chopsocky kung fu films, just fall flat. Sure, in the original some of the sound fx are entirely unrealistic, but that was part of the charm. It all fit together. But the new version stripped apart the ingredients and attempted to reformulate them in a manner more suitable for an American audience. In my opinion, something was definitely lost in the translation.
So far, Jackie Chan has been entertaining when paired with Americans. As the lone star, he just doesn't do it for me. Rumble in the Bronx entertained me, but not like Rush Hour or High Noon.<br/><br/>This is a comedy of errors with so much deception among the "good guys" I am not sure who really are the bad guys. At least I know what they want and they go about getting it. Every other line among the "good guys" is a lie and the master ends up looking like a joke.<br/><br/>The movie is about the fight scenes, which at times are endless. One thing about Steven Seagal when he hits someone they go down - a lot like real life. These are cartoon characters and this is cartoon violence. Some of the scenes were impressive and some were boring. I also thought I saw one of the ropes pulling Chan back at one point. It is so obvious they were being used, maybe my mind made them up.<br/><br/>So, if you like endless fight scenes with a few laughs, enjoy.
It's a film with a silly story, and it's been dubbed laughably into English. Yet it's a transporting bit of fluff, full of zest, miraculous physicality and cheeky humor.
One has to differentiate between three versions. They only differ in the final scene. The International Version misses the whole finishing scene. In the US-Version this finishing scene is slightly longer, only the final shots have been cut. The only uncensored version can be found on the Chinese DVD.
