If you are looking for escapism fun, you've come to the right place, Death Race! When I saw the opening I was a little bit into it not knowing what was playing on a friends TV. Then the opening credits started and I saw Roger Corman's name prominently displayed about 4 times, even though he probably had little to do with the film, it was still cool. And some plot loopholes started to flash to me, like if the USA is in such dirt, and people are making $150.00 a week working 60 hours, how can 75 million afford a $250.00 pay per view? And why is a wimpy guy sidekick in this prison for hard core offenders? Well, the Death Race itself soon made me forget about all of that (and thankfully, it comes up very quickly), because it was a lot of fun to watch. How Twisted Metal does not get any credit for inspiration beats me, but Twisted Metal is one of the few video games I played all the way through and this was definitely a Twisted Metal movie more then a Death Race 2000 movie! After watching this I want to go re-watch Death Race 2000 but my memories of it are that it was kind of lame and definitely Corman low budget cheesy. After watching about four Jason Stratham movies and loving all four I'm definitely a big fan, the guy knows how to pick movies that guys like to watch. For pure escapism fun with fast cars and trucks and lots of weapons, good villains, and a cool good guy, Death Race delivers the goods, 10 of 10.
Jensen Ames (Jason Statham) is a NASCAR driver. Convicted of killing his wife (which he didn't do) he's sent to Terminal Island Prison, where the warden Hennessey (Joan Allen) has set up a competition where the convicts can race cars in order to gain freedom. Needing a boost to ratings the warden has brought Ames in to compete.<br/><br/>In order to race the drivers need navigators, hotties brought in from the local womens prison. Case (Natalie Martinez) is introduced to Ameshis navigator/love interest. She's also the ex-partner of the last champion Frankenstein. Can Ames win the races, get his freedom and get his daughter back? Paul W. S. Anderson hasn't had the best run in Hollywood. In my opinion the last good film he made was 'Event Horizon' back in 1997. Since then its been dross after dross. Although 'Death Race' isn't brilliant it shows he can make a good film. I was initially sceptical about the film, being a fan of the original 'Death Race 2000'. Although David Carradine has a cameoFrankenstein (in honour of the role he had in the original) the two films have no connection apart from the similar titles.<br/><br/>Statham plays the role of tough survivor well. It's a role he seems to keep getting in Hollywood and plays to his strengths. Although I'd love it if he'd done all the (brilliant) driving work himself most of it seems to be stunt drivers. The inclusion of the hot girls seems a stretch too far. Obviously the film would have been too homoerotic if it was just guys, but sometimes you need to keep things simple. The support cast, including Ian McShane do well with the thin dialogue and obvious plot twists.<br/><br/>The action and driving sequences are probably the best part of the movie. Although you'll have seen most of it done before, here Anderson has gone to town and the action scenes save the movie from being an utter disaster.<br/><br/>Popcorn action. If you don't take the film too seriously then you should enjoy it. Not a patch on the original, but the best thing Anderson has put out in ten years.
This movie is about mayhem on wheels, tough guys viewers can root for, and villains whose comeuppances audiences crave. That's what Death Race is all about and, for what it is, it does a solid job.
Death Race is a remake of the 1975 film <a href="/title/tt0072856/">Death Race 2000 (1975)</a> with a new script written by English director Paul W.S. Anderson. It is not based on the 1976 arcade game Death Race, which was inspired by the 1975 film. It isn't exactly stated when Death race takes place. It is stated in the prologue that in 2012 the economy collapsed and that before Death Race there were Gladiator type battles. So it can be assumed that it is at least a decade after the Cage Fights started which was probably around 2015, so we can assume this takes place in 2025. In the DVD commentary, Paul W.S. Anderson describes the original concepta "reimagining" of Paul Bartel's Death Race 2000, so in that sense it's a remake. However, <a href="/name/nm0001016/">David Carradine</a>'s voice cameoFrankenstein at the beginning of the film suggests that it could also be seena sequel. Anderson also says that when he was making the film, he thought of ita prequel to Death Race 2000, showing how the Death Race began in a prison before it went on to become the cross-country race seen in Bartel's film. However, the film can't literally be a prequel since it takes place an indeterminate time after 2012 and Death Race 2000 is set in (of course) 2000. Or it could mean that it was the 2,000th race and has nothing to do with the year. The electric kill switches are in the weapons. All they do is deactivate the weapons so they can't use them to escape. "Warmest regards, your monster." The R-rated theatrical version was not cut to obtain the rating. The unrated edition extends some fights and action scenes and runs more than 4 minutes longer. In the film's prequels <a href="/title/tt1500491/">Death Race 2 (2010)</a> and <a href="/title/tt1988591/">Death Race: Inferno (2013)</a>; we find out that the original Frankenstein was Carl Lucas who was horribly burned in a crash. However, advancements in experimental plastic surgery eventually managed to heal Lucas and give him back his face. He later escapes from prison along with his co-pilot and pit crewmember. But not before framing the cold-hearted and tyrannical Company Man Niles York who assumed control of Death Race. York gets horribly burned in a crash caused by Lucas in which it's announced that Katrina and York were killed. However York was only horribly burned and Lucas and Katrina had escaped. Lists confirms York is Frankenstein and so he is forced to don the mask and compete in the races. It's likely he was the one killed on the track in the beginning of this film.
